Start with Art – Anti Bullying Newspaper Workshop
Start with Art – a newspaper journal workshop on social and ethical issues with primary school pupils.
Creating a journalistic comic strip to explain how they viewed bullying and how it could collectively be overcome following on from an applied theatre workshop run by David Oddie of The Indra Congress. With David and his team I had worked with children throughout the school on an anti bullying (See link) workshop. I worked with David in four different schools and where possible I then followed this up with these workshops which helped the children consolidate what they had learnt on the applied theatre workshops. However, this approach to journaling would work equally well as a stand alone session.

- The Cathedral School of Saint Mary, 23 Wyndham St W, Plymouth PL1 5ER
- 2 hours
- 26-30 students
The day began with drawing exercises on their white boards. We explored the concept of depicting a character who was a bully and the qualities necessary to convey the over bearing presence of a bully. We worked together to produce images which were large and took up much of the space. For the victim of the bully we worked on placing a smaller character with a lot of white space around them to indicate vulnerability.
The children then chose how to depict the protagonists, taking their cues from everyday objects and creating a scenario which built on the concept of a shared responsibility to overcome bullying in a responsible way. The newspaper/posters where then displayed in the school.
